Here is an article for the curious who are interested in the origins of the vaporizer and therefore of vaporization!

This short article will allow us to get an idea of the history of vaporizers and to get a little insight into what vaporization is and its evolution to the present day…

It is useful to point out in the preamble that vaporization consists of heating aromatic plants or medicinal herbs to a temperature lower than that of combustion in order to take advantage of all its active ingredients!

The vaporizer is therefore the ultimate device for vaporization.

Vaporization and herbal medicine throughout history

The history of the spraying of herbal medicine (medicine by plants) by inhalation is a practice that can be traced very far in time through many civilizations such as the Sumerians and the Egyptians.

The first known text on herbal medicine or herbal medicine is engraved on a clay tablet, written by the Sumerians and dating back to 3000 BC.

They used plants such as myrtle, hemp, thyme and willow in decoctions, but it is the Ebers Papyrus dating from the 16th century BC that is the first collection devoted to medicinal plants.

By far the largest in ancient Egypt with "110 pages," it takes stock of several
dozens of plants with their methods of use.

The first traces of vaporization date back to Egypt. we have a record of it written in the book "The History of Herodotus" (1928, Dial Press, Inc., p.226, Book IV) in the 5th century BC.

The Egyptians placed a bed of extremely hot stones and deposited plants or seeds in it, and people gathered around the stones to inhale the vapours!

Even before the vaporizers, Irfan Shiekh of the Mogol Safavid dynasty (now Afghanistan) invented the Hookah known as "narguile, arghila, qalyon, shisha".

About 1400 years ago, the Moguls and then the rulers of India, then more accustomed to the Chillum, introduced the Hookah to India.

Professor Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko, a Soviet archaeologist, confirmed the Scythians' current use of cannabis with the discovery in 1929 of a bronze cauldron filled with charred hemp seeds, as well as hemp clothing and metal incense at the Pazyryk site.

Spraying these days

It was only in the latter part of the 20th century that we saw the appearance of the first vaporizers as such!

The first contemporary vaporizer

Bill Amato (Eagle Bill), the Cherokee shaman and medicine man, invented the famous "Peace of the Future" in 1993.

In his effort to design a more affordable way to vaporize plants while raising public awareness of vaporization, Eagle Bill invented the so-called "Shake and Vape" based on the same Egyptian methods described above in the article.

Indeed, by having and heating a plant in its "spray pipe", it is enough to shake and then inhale the active ingredients of the plants in the form of steam…

Simple and effective!

In 1994, BC Vaporizer claims to have invented the first electric vaporizer inspired by the design of Bill Amato (Eagle Bill).

The manufacturer BC Vaporizer is still in operation today and are the inventors of the first solar-powered vaporizers (yes you read it right!).

The new era of vaporizer

In 2000 Storz and Bickel released the new era of salon vaporizers with the famous "VOLCANO" which is still appreciated today.

The principle of the Volcano vaporizer is simple because it consists of passing a stream of warm air through a plant.

This pulsed hot air flow will simply fill a balloon and just inhale its contents!

Since 2010, the rise of vaporizers (especially portable!) has largely democratized with a multitude of portable vaporizers and salon vaporizers ranging from the smallest that fits in the pocket to the most imposing and efficient!

We will see the different portable and salon vaporizers in a future article.
