DaVinci IQ2 portable vaporizer: Simple improvement or new vaporizer?

A year ago, we gave you our opinion of the big brother of the IQ2, the DaVinci IQ then released in 2017.

We were quite enthusiastic and gave him a good appreciation because the concept was rather innovative.

So we received the IQ2 with just as much interest in this year 2020, and we are eager to try it.

The question we will answer in this article is: Is IQ2 a new vaporizer, offering as many innovations as the IQ at the time, or a simple improvement?

DaVinci IQ2 and heats by conduction

Like the DaVinci IQ portable vaporizer, the IQ2 is equipped with a conduction heating system.

This implies that the plant is in direct contact with the heating element to extract the active ingredients in the form of steam.

In the event that the plant is not in direct contact with the heating element, we would talk about convection heating, and only a flow of warm air would come into contact with the plant.

Although the performance of the convection heater often offers a higher rendering than the conduction, the latter has the advantage of constantly generating steam without impressing the user …

Indeed, heating by convection requires a little breath to the user because it is by inhaling that he circulates the hot air through the plant!

In addition, the DaVinci IQ2 conduction system is well designed, and offers a smooth and homogeneous extraction, without "grilling" plants as with some similar entry-level vaporizers…

Iq2's quality and steam rendering

A small improvement to note with the Portable DaVinci IQ2 vaporizer is its glass ceramic vaporization chamber.

Indeed, it is covered with a glass film, which offers an aromatic rendering slightly superior to that of the first IQ.

In addition, the vaporizer's internal circuit is always designed in Zircone ceramic to provide excellent cooling while respecting the aromas of steam.

Remember, the Zircone is stronger than its cousin white ceramics, and is much more resistant to heat inertia!

The two mouthpieces provided in the pack are also in Zircone, one flat and the second connects the IQ2 to the glassware with its 10mm male connection.

I particularly like this second tip, it offers a more open print and avoids sticking its mouth to the walls of the vapo, moreover it remains perfectly cold in the mouth even when the IQ2 starts to heat up!

The flavour chamber is always present, it can be used empty (according to me the best option) or filled with the plant of your choice to enrich the steam with aromas.

All this contributes greatly to the rendering of the steam, which I find incredibly fresh and soft for a vaporizer of this size and with heating by conduction …

One of the innovations made to the IQ2 is its airflow adjustment system to play on steam density and draw comfort.

This gives the user a bit of control over the final rendering, but for my part I pack the plants thoroughly in the oven (to optimize the contact between the plants and the walls in accordance with the principles of conduction heating) and so I always have a tight flow.

Finally, although I judge the steam of good quality, I find that it lacks finesse in aromas and seems a little bland in the face of that of the best portable vaporizers, which could be afforded for the price of the IQ2.

DaVinci IQ2 battery life and battery

The DaVinci IQ2 portable vaporizer works with a removable 18650 battery.

This battery offers a correct battery life of 3 good vaporization sessions per charge, knowing that the extraction of the active ingredients is quite slow this allows a certain time of vaporization.

Note that by having a second battery in our pocket, we double the battery life of the IQ2!

In addition, this vaporizer can be used during charging, allowing it to be used even when we are running out of battery provided we are close to an electricity source.

We must inform you that the IQ2 heats up more slowly than its big brother the IQ, it reaches 180 degrees Celsius in 55 seconds against 20 for the other…

Phytotherapy and aromatherapy possible with IQ2?

As a reminder, herbal medicine is medicine by pantes, while aromatherapy is medicine by essential oils and plant concentrates.

With its good quality steam and wide range of heating temperatures (0-221oC) the IQ2 vaporizer accepts the vaporization of all types of plants and thus allows the practice of herbal medicine.

By the way, the DaVinci IQ2 comes with an accessory dedicated to the use of concentrates, which was not the case for the IQ!

This is a small disc that seems to be made of volcanic stone, on which we place a little concentrate.

This disc is then placed in the "pod" dosing capsule which can also vaporize smaller doses of plants (0.2g) than if we filled the oven directly.

In addition, the pack also includes small pieces of disposable cotton to avoid using the stone disc and having to clean it!

Ergonomics and use of DaVinci IQ2

The format of the IQ2 is unchanged and retains everything that made the IQ successful.

Its grip and access to the buttons is pleasant and instinctive, and the trench near the vaporization chamber allows an easy filling with a simple nudge without dropping anything next to it.

Nevertheless, the texture and finish of the hull have been revised upwards, making the DaVinci IQ2 an even more beautiful object!

The two mouthpieces offer a bit of versatility and the ability to connect the IQ2 to the glassware to better filter the steam.

In addition, the LED display system rather than a screen is still as classy, very readable, and gives a definitely urban look to this vaporizer!

DaVinci IQ2 vaporizer maintenance

As with all other vaporizers, the DaVinci IQ2 will need to be regularly cleaned to function properly.

Indeed, with time and the uses of vegetable particles and "fats" will accumulate in the steam circuit, which can modify the draw and give off a rancid taste and smells a little strong …

In this way, we will clean as regularly as possible, so that it is as easy and quick as possible.

For this, we will need isopropylic alcohol and cotton swabs.

We will start by removing the mouthpiece (and separating it from its silicone sheath) and the room of flavors of the IQ2, and soaking them in alcohol.

We can let them soak for as long as we want because The Zircone won't suffer, but a minute will be more than enough for the silicone sheath.

In fact, the dirt does not get embedded in the silicone that is unsy adherent, on the other hand the latter deforms very quickly in contact with alcohol!

After bathing, we can rinse the pieces with clear water and then dry them before putting them back in the vaporizer.

Finally, a shot of alcoholic cotton swab in the vaporization chamber will also do him the greatest good!

You can start a vacuum heater to evaporate any traces of alcohol that may be present.

How DaVinci IQ2 works

The DaVinci IQ2 portable vaporizer is easy and instinctive to use, with its display LEDs and navigation buttons.

We have the option to choose between Precision mode (temperature choice to the degree) and Smartpath mode (variable temperature vaporization, i.e. the temperature gradually increases over a given range).

Other functions and settings can be accessed via smartphone with the Bluetooth connected app.

We will remember in particular the concept of calculating the dosage of active ingredients inhaled by puff and session, which the manufacturer defined as revolutionary…

It is of course possible to use the IQ2 without going through the application, as follows:

Turn on/off: 5 quick taps on the main button

Set the temperature: with both buttons under the main button

Switcher between the Celsius and Fahrenheit display: Pressure on all 3 buttons at the same time

Switch between Smartpath mode and Precision mode: A push of the main button

To sum up

This new IQ2 retains everything that made the success of the first DaVinci IQ portable vaporizer.

Indeed, its format, its finish, its changeable battery and its Zircone ceramic components are really appreciable and make the IQ2 a beautiful object, functional what's more.

In addition, the few new features it offers, such as its airflow control and the glazed ceramics in its plant chamber are welcome and improve the performance of the device.

Nevertheless, the rendering has not really changed, and remains a little fadasse although the steam is still fresher, probably thanks to the glazed ceramics.

Thus, the DaVinci IQ2 works well, without being able to render in finesse and depth the aromas of plants as can do a Mighty or a Firefly 2 for example, for about the same price …
